A wireless electric fence can help keep your dog from wandering away no matter where you are. Instant Fence by Pet-Safe has no wires to bury, so it's completely portable an optional power inverter lets you plug it into your boat, car, or camper. The coverage is adjustable, giving Rover a roaming area of up to 90 feet from the transmitter in any direction. Once the receiver collar is on, he will hear a beep as he approaches the edge of the roaming area; if he leaves it, he'll receive a "correction" (a mild electric shock, similar to the static shock you get when you scuff your feet along a wool carpet). The correction continues for 27 seconds, or until Rover comes back into the "safe zone." Recommended for dogs older than 6 months and weighing at least 20 pounds, the system is available at PETsMART and Petco stores; through the SmarterHome catalog (telephone 800-762-7846), and directly from Pet-Safe (888-527-9700). It's also available online at www.pet-safe.com, www.petsmart.com, www.petco.com, www.smartdogtraining.com, radiofence.com/instantfence.html, and www.safepets.com/if300.html. The price is usually between $300 and $430, depending on the vendor and additional components; if you buy directly from Pet-Safe, the fence costs $265 and shipping is free.
