Top-notch tent

Now that the weather has gotten wonderful, it's time to pack up and head for the hills. REI's Base Camp tent series features a clear window in the full-coverage rainfly and a big, zip-open mesh ceiling panel, so you can see the stars. It's large – the main part of the four-person tent is 100 inches long by 86 inches wide and 60 inches high, with an extra three feet or so in the fly. The color-coded pole paths and pole sleeves make setup a snap (even for a novice); the special pocket lets you tuck the door away for easy access. It comes with bags for the tent, poles, and stakes and costs $279 (a six-person version costs $329), either from REI stores, through the catalog (800-426-4840), or online at www.rei.com.

Lighten up around the campfire

If you would snap the handle off your toothbrush to save weight on a camping expedition, we have a cooking set for you. The Snow Peak Titanium Multi-Compact Cookset is amazingly light, strong, and durable. Titanium conducts heat, resists corrosion, and is chemically nonreactive. The 34- and 26-fluid ounce pots, both with lids that double as small frying pans, weigh only 17.1 ounces total, and their curved interiors wipe clean easily. The smaller pot is the right size to hold Snow Peak's Giga Power fuel canister; everything nestles inside the larger pot and it all slides into a nylon carrying case. The set costs $74.95 at REI stores, through the catalog (telephone 800-426-4840) or online at www.rei.com.

Serve yourself right

The Snac Pac by Boker is a nifty little eating utensils package that contains a stainless-steel knife and fork, both with ABS (polymer plastic) handles, tucked into a clever case along with an ABS stirring spoon. The holder hides a salt and pepper shaker as well, and the whole thing is about the size of a felt-tip marking pen. It costs $7-$10 and is available through Flax Art (888-352-9278) and the Magellan's catalog (800-962-4943) and online at www.flaxart.com; www.magellans.com; shop.store.yahoo.com/corradocutlery/bokersnacpac.html; www.osograndeknives.com/Boker/snac–pac.htm; and www.watchroots.com/gadgethtml-1/re105.html.
